I heard this Lily Allen single on the radio around the time Dollhouse was about to premiere and thought I’d found my vid song for the show. Then there was actual show and it was too transparently an Echo/Caroline song so I thought about using it for Adelle or Mellie and in a brief fit of madness even Topher but none of them really had enough back story or footage and in the end I made two Dollhouse vids to different songs and thought I was done. Then the Bennett character happened and I wanted to vid her but again not enough backstory (except in my head). And then I got to thinking how every Summer Glau character apart from Bennett is a doll, at least in the sense of a programmable person. The robot obviously, the Alliance lab rat a little less so but still, that’s how she seems to be written. Hence this vid.

You capture that ability she has to go from vulnerable to killer in a moment, all the while being doll like. All of which are unsettling.

She's a very good physical actress, as you'd expect being a dancer originally, but the unsettling quality is definitely a thing writer seem to pick up on. I don't know whether it's her or them.

I really liked this! There's obviously something creepy about Glau's typecasting, as much as I love to see her kick ass, and the vid really brings out both sides.

I did quite a lot of scanning around YouTube for this and creepy doesn't even begin to describe some of the stuff out there. She does kick ass though.

ahhhh this is so great! I love the meta-narrative with the Youtube/cellphone/use of fourth-wally clips, about Summer and her characters, but I also sort of just love it as a really well put-together vid filled with Summer kicking ass and taking names. and the song is totally catchy. ♥

Yes :) It was going to be such a serious intellectual vid but song was so dancey and the name taking so distracting.

One of the things I liked best about Dollhouse was definitely seeing Summer Glau as a moderately normal human being. Although I also read Topher's feelings about her in a sort of metanarrative "oh, the fanboys can't see her for her characters" sort of way.

Definitely see the fanboy crush thing with Topher and Bennett's character was something of an eat or be eaten response to the doll issue. One of the earlier endings I had for the vid used a scene at the end of her first episode where you're watching the video image of her switch off the surveillance cameras producing that image.

Oh, I liked this!

I loved the part that starts around 0:55 with the reference photos and the makeup and props stuff. The script callouts were especially neat, as well as Summer on the cell phone.
