Some twenties movies especially the European ones have the reputation of being very explicit even by modern standards but I think the imposition of the code did make people work harder to tell the stories, which wasn't always a bad thing artistically. This film in particular draws a lot of its power from being about repression, love that refuses to name itself for all three protagonists.
