"What I think is that all this time travel, focussed around John and Sarah, is affecting Sarah so that when she sleeps, her dreams aren’t dreams, they are actual visits to alternative worlds that are “branching” off the current timeline. Which to me makes a certain sense, given that we've already seen that there are alternate time lines.
