Facepalm:-) So would it be fair to say I covered both the requirements but misunderstood the relationship between them - self similar at all magnifications is not the same as bumpy at all magnifications? And now I want to look for bumpiness in vids.

My maths is just a memory now and watching other people do it (mostly stats). I originally came across fractals reading about other people using the word to describe a way of looking for repeated phrases in Buffy episodes, which seemed to miss the "at all magnifications' aspect of the definition they gave. Then, tangentially through work, stuff about how to model branching patterns (of lungs specifically). They're attractive to biologists as a mechanism for building complex patterns from a few simple rules. Too simple as it turns out - in real lung development there are additional global factors directing the beginning and end of the process.
