Lyrics
Watching the days slip by so fast
Knowing our fate has long been cast
Working our fingers to the bone
Cause nobody loves you when you're gone

Coughing up feeling just for you
To find something real to hold on to
But there is a hole inside my heart
Where all of my love comes pouring out.

You know you'll always be my man
But grab yourself sweetness where you can
Cause sooner or later were going to die
Left to the dogs under the sky

Notes

This one grew like Topsy but slowly - I started laying down clips for it in November. The original idea was that Ellison was the Dorothy of his story, the stranger in the strange land. Which I guess makes Weaver the witch although whether a more humanitarian Elphaba or a more homicidal Glinda still isn’t entirely clear. I’m still not sure who John Henry/Cromartie is either. The wizard or maybe one of the monkeys, but he’s definitely part of the trinity. I clipped a whole bunch of clips from The Wizard of Oz for this but didn’t use any of them – it’s all in the colouring. And I finally learnt how to do tracking mattes. By reading the manual. Go me!

Noir Ellison, black and white, crisp. Clues put together, the detective. But the slinky femme fatale is not about sex. Surveillance footage, watching watchers watching, Ellison watching Cromartie, Weaver watching Ellison watching Cromartie. The reflections in glass, the images through tanks of water, the images on screen; the picture skipping like stuck tape, the gravestones running like film strips. Future and present and past colliding, merging, running into each other, movies displayed on the monitors and images showing through layers. Heaven's hardware problem spelled out in equations and blood.

Computer logic is predicated on Or, on definites, on black and white, on the individual squares of color that deceive the eye into seeing shades. But Weaver is And and One, liquid, changeable, water, invisible, reflecting back what is around her, showing the reflection of the eye, looking back.

Oh, this is just gorgeous. The musicality is off the charts and the narrative is hauntingly beautiful.

Beautiful work!

Amazing structure and use of the black and white. The change of pace and flow into Weaver is glorious, especially with the added layer of it being her voice. I really like the way the vid takes time with clips and allows them to breathe. I love 1:48-1:59 and how long and drawn out it feels. The doors opening is brillantly edited. Coming back to Ellison as the focus with Weaver and then John Henry brings Ellison into focus and the things he was faced with and how he reacts and interacts with the new information. This vid connected me with Ellison in a way I didn't in the series. Beautiful plays of light too. And the use of the graves with "all humans die eventually."

go you!

this is singularly awesome. immaculate editing to a Garbage song that really works. and that shot with John Henry saying ALL HUMANS DIE EVENTUALLY... wow!

This is just ... amazing, I had to watch three times before I could comment. Everything flows so beautifully and oh crap now I miss T:SCC even more.

Oh, *neat*. Ellison was in so far over his head all through this season, and this vid really expresses that well--especially in the sequence involving Ellison's role in Cromartie's death and resurrection as John Henry. Very nice!

Truly amazing! I love what you did with the source and how seamless it all feels. You really made the "Weaver through glass" footage work for you in this vid. Also, I love end shot of Ellison.

This is really beautiful, as everyone above has said. I love how you seamlessly drew from all the episodes. The use of the eel in the tank with the scenes of Weaver's molten self was inspired. The split screen/overlay/tracking matte (?unfamiliar term....) at 2.16 with Ellison and Cromartie is just gorgeous.... and the lyric match at 1.48 ("love comes pouring out" through her finger) was perfect.

Great job. Go you, indeed!

Oh, this is fabulous -- creepy and atmospheric. So much going on here, I'll have to watch it again...

My work here is done:-) The doors: I was trying to do something with elevator doors and then the episode with Savannah being lured down to the basement happened. I knew the structure of this vid but not the story until the very end.

Thank you! I love that shot, I was worried the clip wasn't long enough for people to read it.

Show, where art thou show!

[identity profile] aycheb.livejournal.com 2009-04-28 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! He really was, wasn't he. They really need a third season to give him a chance to resurface. They need a third season.

[identity profile] aycheb.livejournal.com 2009-04-28 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! The show is so very giving but especially with respect to Weaver.

[identity profile] aycheb.livejournal.com 2009-04-28 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I think the 2.16 was a mask, I'm not sure either what difference is between a mask and a matte but I think tracking just means one that moves. And I'm so glad you mentioned that lyric match - it was one of the things that made me certain I could use this song.

This is a totally gorgeous vid! I love the idea of Ellison as Dorothy, and I love the focus on the weird sort-of-not-really-family-unit of Weaver and Ellison and John Henry, and Ellison's sort of responsibility for it at the same time as it's completely beyond his comprehension.

[identity profile] aycheb.livejournal.com 2009-04-30 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Yes, that in over his head, yet still reaching to do the right thing, that's my Ellison.
