Current earworm is the nursery rhyme “Christmas is coming , the goose is getting fat.” Except that second line keeps sounding more like “time is running out.”

I wish there was more time to poke around on iMeem before the PTB sue and it vanishes like some beautiful dream. Or not. My connection is too slow to really watch whole streamed vids, it’s quicker to click through and download, but the place is incredibly browsable. I wish I had time to flesh out some half thoughts on classification systems based on history versus those based on content that a debate on whether slashy slideshows count as vids triggered. OK note to self, that could be a private entry.

I do have some speculation about who BSG’s final five might be and it will probably all be Jossed (Ronned?) tonight so ready or not here’s that at least:

Based on who we’ve seen in the temple, namely Gaius, her and the baby, I think Head!Six is one of the five, or all of them or at the very least an agent of them (because she’s an "Angel from God"). As far as Baltar being there goes I think he was just visiting because my gut feeling is that the whole “Is Gaius a Cylon,?” “Is Starbuck a Cylon?” “Is Gaeta a Cylon?” etc is all one big red herring. At least I hope so because, whoever it might turn out to be, the reveal would feel anti-climatic since the basic sleeper agent concept was done already with Sharon.

I think it would make more sense if the final five were different in kind from the seven we know and incorporeal would cover that. I’m slightly struck by the fact that while Head!Six and Head!Baltar and the woman Baltar knew on Caprica all seem to have quite similar personalities, Caprica completely lacks their cast iron certainty and comes across as positively self-effacing. Did the entity known as Head!Six infect the Six who seduced Baltar and then split into two during the blast? And all we ever see of the baby in the temple is its hand and hands have five fingers and Jupiter is the fifth planet and there are 12 models but if the numbering system started from –2 the missing five would be palindromic.

The thing that struck me lately, which makes me think that Balthar might be a cylon, is that the cylons are able to manipulate their visual universe on the bay ships so that it looks like they are anywhere at all.

All those hallucinations of "head-six" could be a similar visual hallucination, but without Balthar understanding how he controlled it. After all, Caprica, back in season 2, had a similar hallucination of Balthar. Maybe "head-6" is simply 6 the way that Balthar wishes she was, as similarly, vision-Balthar may be Balthar the way that Caprica wishes that he was.

Projection raises so many questions many of them similar to those about the purpose of dreaming in humans. Do cylon's dream? Are dreams an unavoidable side-effect of the way consciousness works or is adaptive in their own right? With us it's why has this evolved, with the cylons and projection why they were made that way. To stop getting bored on ship? How would a cylon born and raised on a ship know what to project about and why would it be more fun than what they knew? Do they have implanted memories like the replicants in Blade Runner and again if so why and who implanted them? Or is life on the basestars a recent development and the early years of the human-models were spent on their mysterious home-world? Or on a more meta level is projection suppposed to reflect the immaturity of the race and suggest the vivid imagination of children?

Gaius is child-like in many ways, the unthinking self-centredness for one. I'm torn because there are several things about him that would be easier to explain if he were some kind of cylon, the visions for one. Although he seemed to prefer Gina to Head!Six and Head!Six being his ideal wouldn't explain why mini-series!Six was so like her. Unless the one was based on the other. Then there's surviving the nuclear blast and guessing the healing properties of Hera etc. so quickly. However, I'm basically convinced by [livejournal.com profile] selenak's argument that his arc works best if he's human (and she does good Dexter discusssion too, I would love to read people talking about that at the ford but am going to wait untill the DVDs come out and I have time, to watch).

I think the story works best if Balthar is human instead of cylon as well.

But there definitely are these anomolies purposefully built into the story - that just about begs you to raise the question. It's fascinating that he doesn't know himself, though.

Too bad about Dexter.
