Dollhouse 2.13 "Epitaph Two: Return"
Feb. 5th, 2010 12:14 amLast week I thought I’d discovered the best viding trick ever. Accidentally forcing the programe to compress an entire clip into 0.88 seconds, instead of simply blurring through at warp speed the rendering software decided to playback a random selection of 22 frames but they looked good! They made sense, they told a story. Tried it again and got the image salad I deserved but that one time it did work. Thing is the difference between a salad and a story is very much in the eye of the beholder. It’s all in the interpolation but then so are real vids and real movies right down back to the Lumière brothers and their Cinematographe.

thuviaptarth is a character study of T:SCC’s Riley. It cuts at you with her fracturedness while also celebrating her courage and capacity for life. God, I miss that show. It ended so well I was almost happy about the cancellation at first but that feeling has passed and now it’s just gone. In its place we have Dollhouse. Which is very different.

22 VVC 09 vid recs
Aug. 26th, 2009 08:06 pmDisclaimer: I suppose these are more (entirely subjective) reactions than recs as such. But words are hard and a vid has to get under your skin for any to come. There is no bad. There is much good. Links to all vids and vid shows are here.

I think a Marxist reading of Dollhouse works best and no one plays musical Marx better than Kurt Weill. With or without that Brecht guy. Youkali Tango is intended as a doll’s eye view of the show - an interpretive dance of false consciousness. Mandalay speaks for the clients (and not so much with the dancing).

Vid rec and Dollhouse thoughts

I do part company with the argument made by the vid even though it's a strong argument and eloquently made. However, to me the show feels like it’s coming from the same place as the show tune. More or less ( Read more... )
ETA: The vid was linked on whedonesque to much defensiveness and being nothing if not counter-suggestible I wanted to add the major criticism I have of the show in its current form. Which is that since it’s found its feet it’s largely switched focus from the actives as victims/future heroes to their possible complicitness in their fate and to the people who work there. Why they do what they do, what keeps them there. If things stay that way the show will be essentially telling a “white man’s guilt/burden” story, which sits very uneasily with any claims to have things to say about human trafficking as the people being trafficked will have no voice.
