I get that. The teleology was actually Kevin's issue more than mine and pretty much a geneticist's knee-jerk response to misuse of the word mutation. In retrospect I'm quite torn about the ending. It came very close to working emotionally. A bit like the yellow crayon speech in Grave, it's either deeply moving or absurd. And sometimes both at the same time.
