Work, work, work this week you’d think they paid me for it or something.

In other news previews of Joss’s S8 comic make me weirdly happy. Wierdly because I don’t know comics, I don’t know how to read them and it’s rather like being at the theatre and having to keep remembering that although it looks like a movie with the people and the talking it really isn’t. Still this comic makes me happy even though I had been very much of the opinion that Buffy’s story had ended and ended well. I’d stopped reading fanfic because all it seemed to do was rework issues that for me had already been covered better in the show. I think that’s why I like the idea of this comic and it’s probably because of the very unBuffyness that people have been finding off putting. She’s doing something new. S7 was her introduction to leadership under a system and circumstances that set her up to fail. Now, after the revolution, and, as it points out on the very first page, the world is changed and everything is different and I love that. I also love the retcon. In the space of one speech bubble Joss reclaims his story. And I like it because just as in TIGQ I didn’t think one sequence of Buffy partying meant that was all she cared to do, I don’t think that four frames of commando!Buffy means that that’s all she’s going to be written as. Even in those four frames there was a definite contrast between the gung ho visuals and the “don’t know what the hell I'm doing” text that felt very Joss and very Buffy to me (and I miss her).

I agree with you on all the levels about the comic. I was very ambivalent about the comic until I read the interview with Joss and looked at the demo pages...then I started to feel quite excited about it. I don't usually read comics either, but this one, I will.
I kind of love the retcon Joss does about TGIQ.

That's exactly it, Joss just sounded so psyched and enthusiatic about the whole thing, really infectiously so.

Yes, yes, yes! with both of you--including that I'm just about clueless on comics. Fray was the first one I ever bought myself, I think.

Regard TGIQ, I not only "didn't think one sequence of Buffy partying meant that was all she cared to do," I also never completely bought Angel's & Spike's insistence, based on their pre-ensouled memories, that "the Immortal" was evil. Come on! Those assessments had jealousy & envy written all over them. I have no idea what/who the Immortal guy might be, but if he was anti-Angelus, he was at least ambiguous, if not actually on the good side--the naughty threesome with Darla and Drusilla shows he's not all sweetness and light! Probably perfect for a post-apocalyptic fling for the Buffster.

But now I'm wondering how this "Season 8" story with fit with the Nancy Holder post B7 novel, Queen of the Slayers? I heard Holder speak about it/read from it at Slayage 2 conference. Haven't read it myself yet, though.

Yes, never mind Andrew, Angel and Spike were pretty much the definition of unrelaible witnesses in that episode and the Immortal, in terms of what he actually did, seemed more of a trickster than a force for the darkest evil.

I've never bought a comic in my life! So we'll be in the same boat.

Safety in numbers :-) I did used to read my friend's copies of "The Beano" when I was much younger but I don't think that counts.

I'm so happy to see people happy about this! Almost everybody including myself had been neg. It's nice to be pos about it. Makes me so happy and excited. :) (Was just watching Welcome to Hellmouth, that's why I'm all "neg" and "pos")

So much agreeage! I like the idea that Buffy is in a different place than where last saw her, a different place than where we expected to find her. That surprise is what I like about Joss, that I'm never sure where the story is going to take us. I have no problem with fanfic but it's rare that I've been surprised by it, it seems to be more about reassurance that the author's and readers' ideas about the show and characters are correct. I can see the appeal in that but it gets a bit dull after a while. A very evil part of me is actually kind of enjoying reading other people's friends lists and seeing some fanfic writers getting all upset - people! you're playing in someone else's sandbox what did you expect? Just because Joss left you his toys to play with didn't mean that he was never going to want them back.

Exactly! I'm glad he's coming back to play. I love a lot of the fanfic, but I can't see getting all upset because the creator of the show decided to carry on with his vision of ...and then what happened?

That's it. Not just the evil thing *g* but I think the best fanfic like Wide Sargossa Sea is the stuff that goes somewhere the original text was never really interested in so is free to tell its own story.
