Why is an iMac like a small child?

Because as soon as you get your back-up act together enough to book an appointment with Doctor Apple the life-threatening illness (random power cut outs) magically disappears.

This may not be your problem, but thought I would share:

When I first bought my G5 iMac (it was a refurb) it was having random power cuts, and I was all cranky that I was going to have to send it back...turns out I didn't have the power cord firmly attached and when I adjusted the "monitor" it would wiggle the cord out just enough.

I pressed it in quite firmly and have had no problems since.

Thanks, that's quite hopeful actually. The 'cure' came after we took the back off to see how it looked and we may have put it back together better than it was or had gotten itself to be. I could really do with it being something dumb like that - all the hardware diagnostics are saying everythings fine and there's no scorching or smell like you might expect if the power unit were screwed.
