Very late in the day but here’s a second batch of VVC reactions this time to vids in the Premieres First Half and Premieres Second Half shows.

Premieres 1
Moons of Jupiter (Doctor Who) [livejournal.com profile] fan_eunice
If they could bottle this. The gleefulness just builds and builds, by the time the key goes in the lock and everyone is teleporting and hugging you want to laugh out loud for the sheer joy of it all.

Rodeohead (Firefly, Serenity) [livejournal.com profile] absolutedestiny
Whedon, the arch spatchcocker of disparate genres, meets his match. I think I like the “Karma Police” section best. Musical torture is fun, who knew.

Bankshot (Hustle) [livejournal.com profile] vagabondage
More joy. Why are there not more ska/reggae vids out there?

West of Her Spine (Dexter) [livejournal.com profile] sweetestdrain
A horrifyingly dark twist on first the lyric and then the whole concept of brotherly love.

Premieres 2
The Loyal (Children of Men) [livejournal.com profile] sdwolfpup
A driving, narrative-shattering beat conveys Theo’s sense of bewilderment verging on panic, contrasting with his eventual determination. The ending is stunning.

Falling From the Sky (Battlestar Galatica) [livejournal.com profile] jarrow272
Heavy hangs the head that wears the crown. Starbuck-the-leader vid for the win.

Cosmia (Pan's Labyrnith) [livejournal.com profile] dualbunny
If there has to be a single standout vid from those I’ve seen this would be it. I have more to say, probably with diagrams and screenshots if I have ever time. And it made me buy the dvd.

Woodstock (Jeremiah) [livejournal.com profile] killabeez
The original Joni Mitchell version of this sixties anthem and a vid that feels as if it has all of that decade’s turbulent history woven into it. The marches, the gatherings, the hope, the betrayal and the endings yet to be resolved.

Nearly New
Sugar (Smallville) [livejournal.com profile] keewick
Like many casual and not so casual Smallville watchers I never cared much for Lana but this vid makes me ache for her, as it turns her round, round again, perpetually the centre of forces no-one will ever explain and ends by giving her back her own story, her own pain.

Jesus for the Jugular (Carnivale) [livejournal.com profile] obsessive24
Extraordinarily powerful, especially the first half, in which the juxtaposition of newsreel Nazis with the growth of Justin’s false religion, the Foucualtian asylum sequences, the aristocrat and the soldier raising glasses to the Great War goes beyond the allegorical. I have some issues with the narrower focus of the last part on the show’s equation of Trinity/Hiroshima with the end of wonder but the point about the tradeoffs made and the way the final scene echoes an earlier clip of a Holocaust camp child are viscerally effective.
