Thank God it's Friday
Jan. 18th, 2008 03:49 pmSo glad this week is done with. Not that it doesn’t start again on Monday but at least it won’t include the covering for absent colleague part.
Did still manage to catch hold of Torchwood on the iPlayer. It looks better smaller, not so obviously Cardiff. Still has that whole trying too hard to be adult thing going (It’s a blowfish, see blow fish ), there were some funnier lines (though many in the Jonsonian way of being both good and original) and that flesh coloured T James Marsters was sporting looked awfully like the american tan inserts to racier dresses in Come Dancing back in the day. Dear Torchwood, never change.
I signed on for the Great Anonymous Vidding Meme and got some really helpful comments, particularly with respect to the current brain vid which is very ideas-led. Clarity, always clarity. The surprising thing about those memes is quite how liberating it is with respect to praiseful as well as concrity commenting. In the James Tiptree biography she’s quoted as saying something similar about the sf community, we get trained so well to criticise that it’s very freeing to be able just to talk about why you liked something.
Also re-downloaded some vids that got lost when I had to wipe my hard drive (well I didn’t have to, it just seemed like a good idea at the time). Lum’s There, there included, the one about Illyria with the ripples and the fade to white, like ice cream. It’s a little sad that in the comics they seem back to writing her in superstrong barbarian princess mode. I liked her in her Ozymandias moments, when she was curious, waxed Shakespearian and learned about Smurfs, the way she went from knowing grief for a universe to feeling it for one small insignificant mortal. Spike is a bad influence and I do hope the comment on her showing ‘emotion’ isn’t going to be the lead in to Illyria-discovers-humanity. They already did the Velveteen Rabbit thing much better, after all emotions don’t make us human they make us vertebrates. Maybe not even that. Cephalpods likely have feelings. Angry octopi? Gothy emo octopuses drowning in their own ink.
Whatever, the Angel reveal was very well done, even Nina being interested could have been a clue. Still it’s rather like the way AtS S4 was for me, the episodes feel as if they go in one eye and out the other without any traction. Stuff happens but it seems like everyone is defined by their species, Nina’s a werewolf, Gunn is a vampire, Angel isn’t, Wesley’s a ghost, Connor’s a hero and Spike is annoying.
