Fractals and chaos theory was one of things which inspired me to do a maths degree. And then I discovered that studying them required a bunch of fiddly dull applied maths I didn't like, and I ended up majoring in a totally different part of maths. But the love is still there! If you're interested in the subject the book that inspired me way back was Chaos by James Gleick. I don't know how much of it is still current, since it was written in the 80s, but it's very good. I think it's awesome that you discovered them through fandom though, it's amazing the things one can learn through meta :)
