Current sources being unavailable this week a meme:

Susie - in the junior version of Blyton ‘s Famous Five Susie was one of the Seven’s sister and functioned in the story as a sort of low level antagonist and wannabe trickster. The Seven like the Five were a mixed group but Susie was the only girl character with any life to her. You weren’t supposed to like her but I did.

Mary Lou Trelawney – there are dozens of Chalet school books, the series spans generations of jolly hockey adventures. Mary Lou was the main character in the first one I ever read so imprinting must have occurred. Unlike Susie she was very much one of the good eggs but something of a pale imitation of Jo Bettany the heroine of the original 1930’s books. Her misdemeanors tended to result in detentions rather than being nearly eaten by Nazis and she was bright but not obviously destined to become a writer. Mary Lou was no Mary Sue.

Eowyn - probably her biggest moment in The Lord of the Rings is dispatching the Nazgul with “No living man am I…” (shortened to “I am no man” in the movie). But I love her more for an earlier speech in response to Aragorn telling her she has to stay behind as the Rohirmm set off to Minas Tirith. It goes something like “All your words are but to say you are a woman and your place is in the house. But when all the men have died in battle you have leave to be burned in the house for the men will have no longer need of it.”

Jo Stockton - is the Audrey Hepburn character in the musical Funny Face who gets catapulted from would be West Village intellectual to modeling glory and a trip to Paris with fashion photographer Fred Astaire (by then in his sixties). She’s really rather shallow but Hepburn has the grace to partner Astaire exquisitely in the dark room number and outshine him complete in her jazz café dance. And she looks gorgeous in Givenchy.

Eliza Dolittle - my Eliza comes from the cast recording of the original West End Show with Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews. I’m not sure it would have worked if they had cast Andrews in the movie, after seeing her in Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music I think she would look wrong although not as wrong as Hepburn did. She sounds wonderful though and more importantly has the force of character to stand up to Harrison’s Hurricane Higgins.

Jean Harrington - the conwoman heroine of The Lady Eve who falls for Henry Fonda’s herpetology obsessed heir. Whip smart and funny with it but not invulnerable, as able to take pity as revenge on a chump.

Laura Roslin - around the beginning of S3 I put most of my Laura love down in vid form and then this season she trumps it by being even more awesome.

Sarah Connor - hardened but human, a survivor, a fighter, a mother. A single working mother. She’s the best.

Buffy Anne Summers - still the one whether she wants it or not.

Personally, I'm very fond of Eliza Dolittle as portrayed by Wendy Hiller. She's a match for Leslie Howard's Higgins and more.

Good list.

That she is but I sadly didn't catch that movie till much later, while the My Fair Lady LP was like a soundtrack to my childhood.

Hey there - sorry to drop into a random post, but I've been trying to reach you by email, but I'm thinking the address I have for you is out of date. Can you shoot me an email at greensilver@gmail as soon as you get a chance? Thanks!
