Oh my god! I was just listening to this song on repeat today, thinking of Kate Moss and a pole and how it would take a vidder much better than I to pull it off in a vid of goodness, and then I come onto vidding and there you are. And this is awesome - it's a really, really wonderful piece of work. The visuals are so well strung together thematically, and I LOVE that the common thread all through is his women. The way you presented it is just so defining for the character.
I particularly liked the movement in the sequence with the round-and-round shot with Drusilla starting around 0:58, and how you kept cutting away and back to it. The "summer rose" lines are great - the Drusilla bit was slightly more literal than the Buffy bit, and both are excellent clip choices and I particularly liked the conscious use of red as a point of connection. The faster cutting toward the end of the Dru segment, the way his attention switched to Buffy, was wonderfully done. And the ending is brilliant, with the growingly manic beat-oriented cutting and all his past just rushing up toward him and he's driving away from it all. LOVED the ending shot - it's very context-based, in that if you aren't a Buffy fan you're not going to know what's going on - but that felt v. intimate, and really brought out the question as to why exactly Spike was going to all this trouble to get a soul. This vid is a great character study, I loved it.
Thank you so much! It means a lot to get such detailed feedback from someone whose work you respect.
thinking of Kate Moss and a pole I really, really wanted to include a shot of "calls-herself-Sunshine," but couldn't quite ditch Lurky for her.
Those S2/Lover's Walk parallels are just a gift from the show, I loved making that section and I'm so glad you picked up on the rose colour connection.
and all his past just rushing up toward him and he's driving away from it all That's exactly what I was hoping to convey and you put it so well. The ending is a bit of a 'gotcha' but funny and , I hope, true. I can't guess what someone who didn't know Buffy would make of the whole thing. Probably still be wondering what the Billy Idol wannabe has to do with the Victorian gentleman with bad hair :-)
